Abstract :

The bulletin entitled Secondary School and College Graduates: A Sociodemographic Analysis was published in June 1998. It shows the evolution of four secondary school and college student cohorts in Quebec (Canada). The cohorts were made up of students who first enrolled in September 1985, 1987, 1989, and 1991 and were followed until September 1996. The study of these cohorts provides information about academic achievement, namely diploma completion after five, seven, nine or eleven years, on the basis of gender, first language, language of use, language of instruction, place of birth, religion, and secondary school entrance age.

The main results have shown that variables related to language, be it first language, language of use or language of instruction, and to place of birth were discriminative. Anglophone students obtained the best results in terms of diploma completion, followed by allophone students (languages other than French or English), then by francophone students. However, in all four cohorts, francophone students, who were the majority group, showed the best progress with respect to diploma completion.

Gender also constituted a discriminative variable, as female students obtained better results than male students in all four cohorts.

However, religion was not associated with academic achievement. Finally, secondary school entrance age proved to be a significant variable as far as educational paths were concerned. Starting secondary school “on time” proved beneficial all along student educational paths and was positively associated with secondary school diploma completion.
