Abstract :

This book was published subsequent to a conference organized by the Institut de recherche sur l’économie de l’éducation (IREDU) and the Établissement national d’enseignement supérieur agricole de Dijon (ENESAD). The conference was held on educational policy assessment in Dijon, France in September 1999. The book is a review of the texts presented by the speakers at the conference.

Subjects Covered
This book deals with several topics, some of them relevant to educational policy analysis. For instance, Alain Mingat discusses how public educational policies are assessed; Pierre Dauce discusses assessment of rural development policies; Agnès Van Zanten discusses municipal policy means and values; Lise Demailly points out the usefulness of a sociological approach to assessment mechanism; and René Rémond discusses assessment of agricultural education.

Contribution of the Book
This book demonstrates the important role educational policies play in society. In addition, it sheds light on the democratic aspects of the policy decision-making process and shows that initiatives and decisions stem more often from ideologies than from objective facts provided by rigorous assessment. These ideologies are based on defence of the teaching profession, involving the definition of strategies for helping students with problems, and on cultural identities, involving the wish for schools to maintain the same characteristics over the years.
