Abstract :

he report Social Portrait of Québec: Data and Analyses, Edition 2001 provides an insight on the social situation in the province of Quebec (Canada) using data from the 1996 census and the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec. Chapters 7 and 8 particularly deal with this subject, and provide an international comparison and a gender-based insight of schooling, graduation and educational paths.

Chapter 7 traces a profile of education over a fairly long time period, with comparisons dating back as far as the 1950s and international comparisons with some OECD countries. Chapter 8 presents a profile of the recent situation of education for forecasting purposes.

Remarkable progress has been made in terms of schooling and graduation for all students since the 1950s. Policies established in the 1960s generated an important effect leading to successful mass schooling. The rates of persons who did not obtain any diploma dropped from 47% in the mid-1970s to 16.5% in 1999-2000.

The most noteworthy trend was female student achievement. Gender-based access rates to studies and graduation rates in the province of Quebec between 1975-1975 and 1999-2000 are presented. Although the number of female and male secondary graduates rose, at the same time the gap widened; the number of male graduates increased from 51.2% in 1975-76 to 76.8% in 1999-2000, whereas female students posted success rates of 63.1% in 1975-76 and 90.4% in 1999-2000, which means a gap increase from 11.9 to 13.6 for the same period.

With respect to international comparisons, the province of Quebec demonstrated strong potential in view of quite high scores in mathematics and sciences. The French-language results obtained for the province of Quebec also faired well, despite some difficulties with grammar rules.
