Abstract :

On a regular basis, the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (Quebec) issues reports featuring data on education and school systems supported by relevant analyses.

In the 2005 issue, the school dropout rates of Quebec youth aged 17 to 24 were reported for the period spanning 1979 to 2003. School dropout is the definite or temporary cessation of school attendance prior to high school graduation. In the bulletin, school dropout is considered as a performance indicator and the method of calculating the school dropout rate is described.

Results presented in the bulletin according to age and gender showed a clear decline in dropout for both genders starting in 1989 (from 18.5% to 11.6% for the group of 17-year-olds during the 1989 to 2003 period). However, the dropout rate of female students was less marked than that of male students. In 2003, for the group of 17-year-olds, the dropout rate of female students was 8.7%, versus 14.3% for male students. Two tables illustrate how the dropout rate evolved during the 1979 to 2003 period.

As for the graduation rate of youths and adults, it rose from 57.1% in 1975-1976 to 88.4% in 1995-1996. After a drop to 79.8% in 2002-2003, it increased to 85.2% in 2003-2004.
