About the IOAA

CRIRES
The Research Center on Academic Success (CRIRES) is an interuniversity centre that includes researcher members from the following seven  Quebec universities: Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR), Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO) and McGill University. The CRIRES was created in 1992 by Université Laval in partnership with the Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ).

The CRIRES gave itself a scientific mission of training and knowledge development as well as a mission of intervention among players in the educational field. CRIRES researchers are devoted to studying school dropout and failure phenomena and to supporting school environments in an effort to foster the academic achievement of all students.

IOAA Mission and Website Objectives
The International Observatory on Academic Achievement (IOAA) is part of the infrastructure of the Research Center on Academic Success (CRIRES). The mission of the IOAA is twofold:
  • To document academic achievement with regard to scientific expertise and proven practices;
  • To become an international virtual venue for disseminating this expertise and these practices, along with a medium for exchanging information on academic achievement.

The IOAA ensures a documentary watch on several academic achievement topics. The Observatory releases the results of this documentary watch on its Website and facilitates exchange among researchers and players in the educational field by organizing occasional events such as colloquia, conferences and symposiums.

 The Observatory Website presents the IOAA documentary material in four sections: scientific expertise, assessed educational programs and practices, assessed educational policies, and statistics.

The purpose of the site is the following:
  • To make available relevant information on expertise, and innovative practices and tools related to academic achievement across the world;
  • To release the results of watch activities in the form of a free monthly newsletter;
  • To announce IOAA activities;
  • To facilitate exchange among researchers across the world;
  • To network the IOAA with other Websites, namely sites devoted to academic achievement knowledge transfer.
Funding Partners and Contributors

CRIRES researchers also receive individual funding from provincial and federal organizations including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

We would also like to extend our warm thanks to Élizabeth Ouellet, Ph.D. for her active role in setting up the Observatory and creating its Website, Suzanne Cotte, public communications researcher, the graduate students whose ongoing work is vital to the IOAA Website documentary watch and, last but not least, the Traductions Global Expressions agency, entrusted with French into English translation of the entire IOAA Website content.
