Abstract :

The Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec (Canada) releases Education Statistics Bulletins to present regional, national and international data on education and school systems, along with relevant analyses.

The statistics bulletin entitled Level of Graduation Upon Leaving the Education System, released in November 1997, deals with the distribution of students leaving the Quebec education system by highest diploma earned. The statistics presented in the study cover the period between 1987 and 1995 and pertain to student retention and graduation in the general population.

The data used came from the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec and from the 1991 Canadian census. These two sources of data provided appropriate information.

The most important finding revealed by this study is that between 1987 and 1995, the proportion of persons leaving secondary school without a diploma decreased considerably and consistently. This significant decrease was mainly observed among female students, although it was also apparent among male students. In 1987, 23.1% of female students left school without obtaining their diploma, whereas in 1995, this proportion had decreased to 7.1%. For male students, the same proportion went from 38.2% to 22% during the same period.

At the other end of the spectrum, the proportion of female students with a bachelor’s degree increased considerably, rising from 21% to 33% in 8 years. For male students, the increase was lower although still noteworthy. Canadian census data supported the observations of the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec.
